With more and more people visiting and diving the Raja Ampat area, the Raja Ampat Research and Conservation Centre (RARCC) and Papua Diving – Sorido Bay & Kri Eco Resort are making it a priority to take the necessary steps to ensure that our local staff are better equipped to deal with any problems or emergencies that may arise.
This last June, 2017, in partnership with the Divers Alert Network (DAN) Europe, an RARCC volunteer, whom is a DAN Instructor Trainer, taught one of the two Papua Diving onsite certified Indonesian nurses, John Latumahina, the first aid steps needed in taking care of an injured diver, as well as how best to deal with dive related emergencies. Not only does this help in preparing the Papua Diving nurse for these kinds of emergencies, but will also give the RARCC the ability to train more local people, with John helping to assist our volunteer, since he is now a DAN trained nurse and both an English and Bahasa Indonesia speaker.
Our nurse participated and completed the following DAN courses:
Medical Oxygen Rebreather Provider
Automated External Defibrillation Provider
Hazardous Marine Life Injuries
On-Site Neurological Assessment for Divers
The RARCC is sponsored by Papua Diving and, by providing this training, our NGO hopes to contribute in promoting diver safety in the Raja Ampat region, as well as to improve the skills of the Indonesian people.
Our resident volunteer is available to teach all DAN diver and instructor courses.
Thanks to his expertise, we are also offering technical diving training and instructor training, according to the International Association of Rebreather Trainers (IART) and the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD) standards.

“Congratulations on the completion of the above courses John, and for all of the hard work you have put in. We thoroughly look forward to your continued work and dedication in everything you do, not only for the company, but also in assisting your fellow staff members by helping them become better prepared, and educated, in keeping this area safer as a whole.”
Message written by the Sorido Bay Resort’s manager, Christopher Harvey.
The RARCC has already started to teach the first group of local people working for Papua Diving some of these DAN courses.
More updates coming soon.
